We planted apple trees in the paddock in the same year as opening Hill View Pateley. Three years on, the have matured enough to give us a beautiful Autumn harvest.
In years gone by, local farmers would choose varieties that fruited across the widest possible stretch of months, stack and store them so they lasted all year. It was a point of pride to make an apple pie with the last of the previous year’s apples with the first of this years.
Just like our small orchard, our skills have not matured that far yet. However, we are able to share our fruit with the guests coming to us in September, with the birds and with the pigs at Corn Close Care Farm, who love a bit of windfall.
