Ripley Castle: Where History Meets World-Famous Ice Cream!

The longer we live here, the longer we are amazed by the hidden gems in Harrogate District and how architecture that goes back centuries is reinvigorated and reinvented for the modern world. The Ingleby family has maintained a long-standing connection with Ripley Castle, passing it down through generations.


One example within a 20 minute drive from the cottages is Ripley Castle. The history of Ripley dates back many centuries. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, a survey of England and Wales commissioned by William the Conqueror. At that time, it was a small settlement with agricultural significance. Today, it is a pretty little historic place with a Medieaval feel that has good food, and easy parking.


Ripley Castle is its centre piece, with its own rich history that spans over 700 years. The castle was originally built in the 14th century by Sir Thomas Ingleby, a member of the Ingleby family. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone various renovations and expansions, evolving into the stately residence that stands today.


It is open to the public most days, and visitors can explore its centuries-old architecture, picturesque grounds. Most people go to wander through the castle's opulent rooms, adorned with antique furniture, family portraits, and tales from centuries past. The castle's impressive architecture and well-preserved interiors offer a glimpse into the lives of those who once called it home. We go there a couple to explore the deer farm, the lake and the gardens.... and also partake of the a little Ripley Ice Cream, which is made on site.
