Feathered friends

If you're a bird-watching enthusiast, then you'll know how special it is to be able to observe and appreciate the beauty and diversity of our feathered friends in their natural habitats. The Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in North Yorkshire, England is a truly exceptional place to do just that, with a wide variety of birds calling this stunning region home.

We are spoiled with the number of walks from the doorstep of River View Pateley. These trails take you through a range of habitats, from moorland and woodland to rivers and streams, giving you the opportunity to see a wide variety of birds in their natural habitats. Staying at the cottages provides easy access to the best bird-watching spots in the region, including the wildflower meadow in front of the cottages, which is home to ground nesting birds at the right time of year.

Some of the rare and interesting species you might be lucky enough to spot in the AONB include the red kite, with its distinctive reddish-brown plumage and long, forked tail, and the osprey, which can be seen in the AONB during the summer months. These large birds of prey are easily recognizable by their distinctive wingspan and the fish they often carry in their talons.

The Nidderdale AONB is also home to a number of owls, including the beautiful tawny owl. We have spotted one of these on bank in front of River View Pateley holiday cottages, making it the perfect place to stay for owl-watching enthusiasts. In addition to these rarer birds, the AONB is home to a wide range of other species, including golden plovers, wagtails, and thrushes.

One bird that is particularly special to the Nidderdale AONB is the curlew. These large, distinctive birds are known for their long, curved bills and distinctive calls, and can often be seen and heard on the moorland areas of the AONB. The AONB is also home to a number of ground-nesting birds, such as lapwings and plovers, which can be seen on the open ground during the breeding season.

We hope this has whetted your appetite for a bird-watching trip to the Nidderdale AONB. Whether you're an experienced birder or just starting out, you're sure to find plenty to see and enjoy in this beautiful region. With sets of binoculars and a bird book in each of the cottages, River View Pateley is a great place to start the adventure.
